Self Esteem Assessment

What it is:

Self-esteem, on a subtle and often unconscious level is how one actually feels about himself, based on his individual sense of personal worth and importance.

High self-esteem results primarily from one’s accepting complete responsibility for his individual well-being and taking full charge of his own life. It is rooted in unconditional acceptance of himself, despite his mistakes, defeats and failures, as an innately worthy and important being.

What it is not:

Self-esteem is not “self-love” in an egotistical sense. In fact, self-praise and boasting are classic symptoms of low self-esteem. Neither is it an intellectual inventory of one’s particular talents, capabilities or accomplishments. History is crammed with highly successful industrialists, sports figures, literary and artistic figures who suffered from crippling self-esteem resulting in alcoholism, drug addiction and even suicide.

Why it’s important:

A healthy self-esteem is absolutely essential to personal happiness and a rich enjoyment of life. It is a fundamental internal need that underpins and supports our external needs for control, achievement, and professional and personal relationships.

Self-esteem and professional leadership:

A leader with a healthy self-esteem knows what he knows and what he doesn’t know based on his current awareness and isn’t afraid to ask questions. A healthy self-esteem leads to self-efficacy, self-confidence and self-respect. These positive emotions lead to important leadership qualities of vision, determination, influence, integrity and respect for others.

Building self-esteem:

Given the importance of self-esteem in the development of a leadership mindset, behavior and skills, it is important to evaluate one’s current level of self-esteem and identify blind spots in one’s self-awareness. A key element of leadership coaching is to help evaluate one’s self-esteem and provide guidance on how to expand and reprogram one’s self-awareness. By taking positive action on increasing one’s self-awareness, one can increase positive emotions, level of optimism, and quality of decision making, all building blocks of a successful leader.

Self-Esteem Index:

The first step in the process is to take the Self Esteem Evaluation and generate your Self-Esteem Index (SEI).
